This is the head teacher's house in Jinja where I grew up between 1954 and 1962 (age 8-16). It used to be a clean, white-washed house with a beautiful garden that my father used to tend. He was the Head Master of the Jinja Senior Secondary School. This school produced some of the top performers in the then British Commonwealth based on the Cambridge University O level examinations that we all had to pass in order to proceed to high school. My eldest brother was the top scorer in mathematics in the entire Commonwealth, and one of his classmates who went on to become a gynecologist in Montreal, Canada, was the top scorer overall in his year. My future wife, Asha, went to the Jinja Girls' School at the age of 10. <br />
Later, after the expulsion of Asians by Idi Amin in 1972, the school and the teachers' housing deteriorated. A narrative of the lowest level that the school reached is available through this link: http://observer.ug/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7629%3Ajinja-ss-sings-songs-of-revival&catid=85%3Aeducation&Itemid=106
